Directorate-General Competition (COMP)

This Directorate-General is responsible for the implementation of competition rules as to ensure competition in the single EU market is not disrupted. The aim of their work is to ensure the welfare of the consumers and strengthening the competitiveness of the EU.

The main tasks of the DG are:

  • contest the establishment of cartels
  • evaluation and approval of mergers
  • liberalisation of markets and monitoring state interference
  • preventing unfair competition of enterprises by use of government aid
  • control of government aid regarding regional development and research programmes
  • international cooperation
